Goliath in 1 Samuel 17, Pastor Tom Baker, he's host of a radio show called Law and Gospel,

Tom, welcome back. Thank you. What had happened briefly in Israel's story so far leading up to this?

Well, as we heard from previous weeks, Israel wanted a king like the rest of the nations.

God was displeased with that because he was their king, but he still told Samuel to anoint Saul

as king, and Saul was anointed as king. But it says in verse 14 of chapter 16 that the spirit of

the Lord departed from Saul and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. And Saul's servants

recognized that, and they said, let our Lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out

a man who is skillful in playing the liar. Now that was a kind of a guitar instrument. And with

a harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will be playing it, and you will be well. So Saul agreed

with that, and they brought to him David, the son of Jesse. And at the end of chapter 16,

Saul loved David greatly. And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the liar

and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.

Now, what happened is that the Philistines had gathered their armies for battle against Israel.

And out of the camp of the Philistines, there was a man over nine feet tall, and his name was

Goliath. And he said to the Israelites, why have you come out to draw up for battle?
