This is the Bama podcast with Marty Solomon. I'm his co-host, Brent Billings. Today, I am joined by Josh Bosse, to continue our journey through the Gospel of John, discussing the meeting of Jesus and Nicodemus and the themes of their conversation.

0:20.0

Yes, a very exciting conversation. One that contains possibly the most famous Bible address of all time.

0:26.0

Can you believe it? Yeah, I think 100%. Genesis 1.1. That's true. In the beginning, let there be light.

0:34.0

Is probably the contender. Yes, but in terms of Jesus, certainly, this is at least one of the big ones. Yeah, I think this is it. For what Jesus says, I think this is it.

0:44.0

Yeah, and you know, it's probably the one verse you can be pretty sure that you don't even have to read it. Most of the people at home will be able to read it for you.

0:53.0

Yeah, it's a big conversation. We did talk about this passage once before when we're going through the chosen episode 226 of Bama.

1:01.0

But we kind of just talked about how they portrayed the conversation and probably did not dive into the level of detail that Josh is about to drop on us right now.

1:14.0

So go back and review that if you like, but I think I think this is pretty well stand alone as far as that goes. Yeah, I actually I have not jumped on the chosen. I know I need to.

1:26.0

I'm looking forward to it, but you know, my life's been crazy. I haven't had time for it. So yeah, I'm behind on those. So that'll be fun to be able to compare this teaching to that. I have no idea what's in there.

1:37.0

It's it's a completely different kind of conversation. So I don't I think these two will compare it all, but I do I do actually kind of want to start there like before we get into this.

1:45.0

There's a lot of there's some pre context here in in this story. So if we remember back to like what just happened in the text, you know, because we're starting at chapter three verse one.

1:59.0

What happened right before this was, you know, Jesus cleansing the temple. Pretty big thing. And also we were given a hint that it was around. Do you remember what time of year it was Brent?

2:12.0

This would be was it Passover. It was Passover correct. And that will be very important for this. And actually, you know, before I say anything else, that's probably all the pre context we need. Let's read the first two verses. Brent Billings.

2:28.0

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus, who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God for no one could perform the signs you were doing if God were not with him.

2:44.0

Yes, exactly. So there's a couple pieces of information we have here that are really interesting. And the first one being, you know, kind of the uniqueness of the setting like normally when Jesus is talking to other rabbis other Pharisees.

2:59.0

It's kind of a public discourse situation. And here we kind of have, you know, this meeting that's happening at night, it seems, you know, much more personal like Rabbi to Rabbi, you know, it seems like Nicodemus just kind of.

3:17.0

He's like, what the heck is going on? It seems like, you know, they're talking shop behind the scenes. And that's pretty unique in terms of like, you know, what we see Jesus doing in the gospels.

3:31.0

Something that chosen made me realize is that I've always pictured this meeting in like a garden sort of setting. But the text does not say that. And it is not how the chosen portrays it.

3:45.0

So that's interesting that we don't necessarily have any direct clues as to where this took place. But that is interesting. Not as I have pictured it for, you know, 35 years or whatever.

3:55.0

Yeah, that's funny. I always imagined it like happening on a rooftop or something.

3:59.0

That's exactly what the chosen does with it. Oh, that's funny. Well, there you go. Good job shows and you read my mind.

4:06.0

But I actually think a garden might be a better place because well, I'll get into that in a second. The other unique thing I want to kind of focus on here is like the person of Nicodemus.
