The smallness of the world, the immediacy of it, is almost unbearable.

We've made it this way, or it has been made this way for us by those with the power to do so.

Once upon a time, the rest of the world was as remote to us as other planets.

We were insulated by the tyranny of distance and could not and did not know what other places were like, whether or not people in those

other places lived lives like ours or even lives we could recognize at all.

Now we know what other places are like.

Now we cannot help but know what's happening to other people in other places,

the nature of their lives and deaths.
