Every year thousands of children are taken out of the safety and comfort of their homes and transported into congregate care facilities, often labeled "Troubled Teen" facilities. Survivors of these programs report horrific emotional, psychological, and physical abuse. And in addition to mourning what they experienced INSIDE the program, Survivors also mourn the experiences they were robbed of during the most formidable and impactful years of their lives.

0:43.7	cults like the IFB or in the troubled teen industry have missed out on some truly memorable
0:49.5	moments, things like prom and graduation ceremonies. And it's heartbreaking to hear
0:53.9	that they have missed out
0:55.1	on things that so many have taken for granted. Today's guest is working on something truly
1:00.2	amazing called Survivor Prom. This event is for survivors of the Trouble Teen Industry,
1:06.1	Colts, and other congregate care settings. It's a chance for adults who missed out on prom and other
1:11.6	milestones to come together and celebrate each other. But it's about so much more than just prom.
1:16.9	It's a symbol of taking back the years of their lives that they lost while in these programs.
1:21.3	And it's not just about the big moments like prom or graduation ceremonies.
1:24.6	Survivors have missed out on forming friendships, learning how to be part of a
1:27.7	team, and even just figuring out who they really are. It's no secret these programs can have a
1:32.9	devastating effect on social skills. And some people have even gone through extreme things like
1:37.6	conversion therapy that have made adjusting to everyday life really difficult. So for many
1:43.8	survivors, prom is about taking back the time that was
1:46.9	stolen from them. It's a chance to celebrate each other and rebuild after some truly challenging
