I was a police officer. It was a difficult, dirty job, but I kept dragging myself into the station.

Truth to tell, after 20 years as a cop, I didn't have much else left. I had been married twice and my ex-wives never got in touch.

I wished that I could have said the same about my creditors.

They were on my back constantly about the money that I owed.

It was enough to drive a man to drink and every night after work I would prop up at a bar.

I didn't care where I went.

After enough whiskey chasers, the bars all started to look the same to me.

One bleary morning I was heading into work thinking that it was just going to be another lousy day.

I walked up the steps and went into the station.

There was the usual gallery of deadbeats milling around by the front desk. There were other

cops and lawyers and their clients. A cleaner was lethargically sweeping the floor. I recognized a few

faces but didn't speak to anyone.

I was focused on getting coffee.

Everybody else could wait.

I yawned, scratched the stubble on my chin and saw the man who was going to change

my life forever.

But I didn't know that then, of course.

I saw a man with a sallow skin and hair that was clipped close to the skull.

He wore jeans and a sweatshirt unzipped over a t-shirt, showing a logo so faded that I couldn't
