Summary

"Alcohol is the only drug you have to justify not using"...having spent the large part of the last 14 years drinking alcohol, 6 months ago I decided to become sober curious and significantly cut down the amount of alcohol I consumed, to now hardly any. Today I feel the best I have ever felt in my life for it. I take you through my relationship with alcohol growing up as a high level rugby player and the pressures of drinking working in the city in my mid 20s. I discuss the physiological effects that drinking alcohol has on the brain and body and run through the pros vs the cons of drinking. The aim of this episode is to encourage people to make informed decisions about their alcohol consumption in order to benefit their physical and mental health, and to open people's eyes up to becoming more sober curious.

Hello and welcome to episode number 24 of the bouncing back podcast with me, James Middleton.

0:13.1

It's been a hot minute, but I am back and I'm looking forward to getting these podcasts up and

0:18.6

running again. I've been travelling around a lot. I met a woman,

0:22.7

basically. That's why I have been traveling so much because she is American and she lives in

0:28.9

America. Her name is Shannon, as I'm sure lots of you will know. And that is the reason why I've been

0:34.7

away from this microphone in my house in London because I'm in a long distance

0:39.7

relationship now and never thought I would be but this is long distance we are we have an entire

0:44.6

ocean between us and a six hour time zone but I won't get into too much detail about that

0:50.6

because those of you who follow me will will know enough about it but we're here

0:55.1

to talk about alcohol and being sober curious because this and this is the podcast that I wanted

1:04.1

to start with first because over the last six to eight months I would say I have become a lot more sober curious and a lot more aware

1:13.4

of alcohol and seeing some of the benefits that it's had in my life from significantly reducing

1:20.6

it. But before I get into talking about it today, I just want to make it abundantly clear that I'm not going to be the

1:30.3

person that's going to be preaching to you that you shouldn't drink alcohol or tell you what you

1:36.1

should and shouldn't do, especially because I don't want to be that self-righteous twat.

1:40.7

You know, we all know someone who at some point has stopped doing something for a very short period of time

1:46.0

and they brag about how good they're feeling like you know they're on this high horse

1:50.5

you know for example someone stopping drinking coffee let's just say or it could

1:53.8

even be alcohol and they walk around on on their high horse with their nose

1:57.2

turned up telling everyone oh I don't drink coffee anymore I don't actually drink

2:00.5

alcohol did you know it's not very good if I'm feeling so pure so pure I wake up

2:04.1

and I'm fresh and I'm fresh and I'm not, I'm far better without it. And you should try it. God, life changing. I don't recognize me anymore. New person. New person. Don't worry. I'm not going to be that guy. I will still probably drink in my life, just a
