And you are a wine importer.

That's what they say.

How did you get it started with that gig?

I wanted to be in the wine business. I mean most of us head but our ways

into the wine business because we like wine and we're trying to get somebody to

pay us so we can indulge our habit. I started in wholesale and the wholesaler that I worked for bought German wine from two supplier slash importers.

So we had good stuff and I had a local reputation in

Washington DC as being one of the go-to German wine guys. And what era is this?

What decade? This is the middle 80s, you know, because I started in the wine business in 1983 and we were starting to sell German wine kind of 85 86 or so.

So I was happy to do it. We did a decent piece of business, but I remembered my friends that I had made in Germany during the 10 years that I lived there, and I thought, you know what, I'd kind of like to do this myself.

So I went to the owner of the company and

said what would you tell me if I asserted to you that I could double or triple our

German mind business and double the margin.

He said, what's the catch?

And I said, well, it entails a small upfront investment.

He said, how small?

And I said, well, send me to Germany for a couple of weeks and I'll put a portfolio together
