Welcome back to the next picture show, a movie of the week podcast devoted to a classic film and the way it shaped our thoughts on a recent release.

In our last episode, we talked about a Mighty Wind, the Christopher guest directed mockumentary about a concert thrown by folk revival stalwarts.

With this episode, we'll shift to a different style of music and a different style of comedy by discussing Eurovision Song Contest, the story of Fire Saga.

The film opens with a music video released online as a teaser a few weeks before the movie came out,

a performance of the song Volcano Man by Fire Saga, an elaborately costumed music duo consisting of Lars Erickson and Secret Eric's Doctor, played respectively by Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams.

What the clip didn't reveal the time is that the video depicts the music dreams they hope to someday realize.

Their musical reality? Playing local favorite

yaya ding-dong for the hard-drinking residents of the only pub in their small town

in the country's barren north. But a series of odd, sometimes unfortunate developments

sends them to the Eurovision song contest in Edinburgh as Iceland's representatives. Once there,

they're forced to contend with their provincial background,

they're far more polished competitors, and the vagaries of their relationship,

a could-be romance complicated by Lars' musical dreams,

and the slight possibility they might be siblings

through the proclivities of Lars' extremely handsome father Eric, played by Pierce Brosnan.

We'll talk it over and consider the wonders of co-star Dan Stevens and other aspects of the film after the break.
