while residential neighborhoods were filled with children off school for the holidays.

Then on the 25th of July, everything changed,

as the entire city's focus shifted to the search for a missing girl. It was a bammy summer afternoon in Santa Cruz, California on the 25th of July 2015.

The schools had closed their doors for summer break.

An 8 year old Maddie Middleton was at home with her mother Laura Jordan.

Maddie and her mother lived at the Tannery Arts Centre, a multicultural arts campus, set on eight acres.

It was formerly used as a leather tannery, which lent its current name.

The Tannery stands as a public-private non-profit initiative, boasting 100 affordable

loft departments designated for low-income artists and their families.

Alongside the residential units, the campus house to cafe, a dance studio and an art studio.

It functioned not only as a living space, but as a vibrant hub for a like-minded individuals to congregate and foster a sense of community.

Despite its emphasis on artistic endeavors, the Tannery received federal funding and was subject

to fair housing laws.

This meant that its leaders couldn't discriminate against non-artists when choosing tenants,

which resulted in a diverse tenant mix.
