Summary

When we think about colonial American history we think about the colonies of the English, the Dutch, the French, and the Spanish. Rarely do we think about the colonies of the Russians. And yet Russia had colonies in North America. Gwenn Miller, an Associate Professor of History at the College of the Holy Cross, joins us to investigate a history of Russia’s colonies in North America with details from her book Kodiak Kreol: Communities of Empire in Early Russian America. 0:45.2	is a very interesting one, because unlike the other European
0:48.2	empires, which moved west across the Atlantic
0:50.8	and then clink territories along the east coast of North America and in the Caribbean.
0:55.0	Russia expanded its imperial holdings by moving east, across the Eurasian continent,
1:01.0	and by claiming territories along the west coast of North America.
1:05.6	So what does this story of Russian colonization look like?
1:09.1	And do the practices and ideas of European colonization change when we view it in this Western context?
1:15.5	Gwen Miller, an associate professor of history at the College of the Holy Cross,
