The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointed,

So you think about it for a pretty good period of time, Jewish leaders had been plotting and scheming to end Jesus' life.

Their animosity in a sense had been building since the beginning of Jesus'

public ministry. Think about John 5, for instance, when Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath,

and the Jewish leaders were outraged. When Jesus proceeded to equate himself with God, then

they became all the more determined to kill him.

the opposition to Jesus was coming to a head.

his anointed, like centuries before.
