Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23 - 'You put aside the commandment of God, to cling to human traditions.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 581 (in 'Jesus and the Law') - Jesus did not abolish the Law but fulfilled it by giving its ultimate interpretation in a divine way: “You have heard that it was said to the men of old . . . . But I say to you. . . .” With this same divine authority, he disavowed certain human traditions of the Pharisees that were “making void the word of God.” (abbreviated)

- 1764 (in 'Passions') - The passions are natural components of the human psyche; they form the passageway and ensure the connection between the life of the senses and the life of the mind. Our Lord called man’s heart the source from which the passions spring.

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Gospel Exegesis podcast. We're going to go through the

0:16.6

gospel reading from today's Mass. As always, we want to help you understand the literal sense of

0:21.8

scripture. So we're doing a verse by verse exegesis, really diving into what Jesus meant when he

0:27.1

used these words originally. So today's reading kind of jumps around a little bit. So we're looking at

0:32.5

Mark chapter 7, verses 1 to 8, verses 14 to 15, and verses 21 to 23.

0:41.0

So it's all from Mark 7, although it's taken out some of the verses in between those chunks,

0:46.3

otherwise it will be too long.

0:48.4

So here's today's reading.

0:49.6

It is a little bit of a longer one compared to normal gospel readings. The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus,

0:59.8

and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without

1:05.4

washing them. For the Pharisees and the Jews in general follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow, and on returning from the marketplace, they never eat without first sprinkling themselves.

1:22.8

There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the

1:28.1

washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes.

1:32.7

So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the

1:38.4

elders but eat their food with unclean hands?

1:43.4

He answered, it was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied

1:48.0

in this passage of scripture. This people honors me only with lip service, while their hearts

1:54.8

are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless. The doctrines they teach are only human regulations.

2:03.2

You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions. He called the people to him

2:10.6

again and said, Listen to me all of you and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean.

2:20.0

It is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean.

2:24.9

For it is from within, from men's hearts, that evil intentions emerge.
