Values are verbs.

Values are verbs. What we mean by that is this. Core values in an

organization are meant to be operationalized. They're what we do. They're not

just concepts, but they're how we act and how we go about doing things.

And the first thing I want to say to people listening to this is that when I go to most organizations

to talk about values, very few of them have not had a conversation

about values before. We're in that time where everybody's got some. And oftentimes

they're like, oh no, we just finished our values exercise last week or last month or last year and we have it in Lusite or on a poster or on a t-shirt.

We can't change them.

And I always say don't worry about changing them.

This is not a marketing thing.

If you have something out there that you've already said, that's okay.

That's 10% of your values.

The most important thing is you figure out what the right values are and then you

operationalize them and even if that's not exactly the same thing that you're

putting out there in a marketing effort or a communication effort.

It's building it into some of the way things get done that matter, which is 90% of what your values do.
