Summary

Elisabeth Elliot was a young missionary in Ecuador when members of a remote Amazonian indigenous people group killed her husband Jim and his four colleagues. And yet, she stayed in the jungle with her young daughter to minister to the very people who had thrown the spears, demonstrating the power of Christ’s forgiveness. This courageous, no-nonsense Christian went on to write dozens of books, host a long-running radio show, and speak at conferences all over the world. She was a pillar of coherent, committed faith—a beloved and sometimes controversial icon. Author and Elisabeth Elliot biographer Ellen Vaughn joins the podcast to talk about researching Elisabeth’s life and being given access to her personal private journals. Turns out, that while things in the limelight might have looked golden, Elisabeth’s suffering continued refining her in many different and unexpected ways.

Welcome to the Elisa Childers podcast where we equip Christians to identify the core beliefs of

0:13.6

historic Christianity discern its counterfeits and proclaim the gospel with

0:17.5

clarity, kindness, and truth and I'm so excited to bring you this conversation that

0:21.7

I've just had with Ellen Vaughn, who is a New York Times

0:24.0

best-selling author.

0:25.8

She co-wrote the Jesus Revolution book with Greg Glory, but we're going to talk about today

0:30.6

is her authorized biography of Elizabeth Elliot. So that has come

0:35.5

in two volumes. I've read the first volume. The second volume has just come out and

0:39.8

I'm so excited to read it but I'm so excited for you to hear this conversation because there is so much depth and richness to it.

0:48.3

Ellen, of course, researched Elizabeth's life, had access to all of her personal journals going all the way back to

0:54.0

when Elizabeth was a little girl and if you're unfamiliar with Elizabeth a story

0:58.0

we start the podcast that's one of the highlights for me we start the

1:00.9

podcast with Ellen recounting the story that we all sort of

1:04.4

know about Elizabeth Elliot and then we go into a part of her life that isn't as

1:11.0

public. Not a lot of people actually know about this sort of second half of her life.

1:17.0

We all kind of know her as this hero who went into the tribe who had killed her husband and shared the gospel with them. but there was a lot that happened in her life after that including two more marriages. And so we talk about that today and of course Ellen writes a lot about that more deeply in the book called Being Elizabeth

1:34.8

Elliot. So I just highly recommend these autobiographies. The first one is

1:38.1

called Becoming Elizabeth Elliot and then there's Being Elizabeth Elliot and I

1:42.3

think that the good, bad, and ugly of Elizabeth's life

1:45.6

has a lot to teach us as modern Christians today. So I really hope you enjoy this conversation.
