Summary

In this episode, I explore the concept of skillful effort, also known as right effort, which is the sixth aspect of the Eightfold Path. I explain that skillful effort isn't about "trying harder" but rather about applying energy wisely, much like a gardener tends to their plants. This involves four key tasks: preventing unskillful states from arising, abandoning those that have already arisen, cultivating skillful states that haven't yet appeared, and maintaining the skillful states that are present. I offer practical examples, such as building a "fence" by avoiding triggers like social media first thing in the morning, "weeding" by noticing and withdrawing attention from unskillful thoughts like anger after being cut off in traffic, "planting seeds" by intentionally practicing gratitude or kindness, and "tending the garden" through consistent, balanced effort. The core takeaway is that by understanding and applying these principles, we can foster genuine organic growth in our minds and lives, leading to greater clarity and well-being.

Welcome back to another episode of the secular Buddhism podcast.

I am your host, Noah Rusjeda.

And today I'm sharing the audio of a live Dharma talk I gave. This is part six of an

0:24.7

eight-part series covering the topic of the eight-fold path. Part six is about wise or skillful effort,

0:34.0

also known as right effort. So without further ado, this is the audio of that live Dharma talk.

0:43.1

Over the last several weeks, we've been going over each of the aspects of the eightfold path.

0:51.9

The eightfold path, I like to think of it, kind of like a practical map or an

0:57.4

outline for living more skillfully. It's at the heart of what you could consider the Buddhist

1:04.2

practice. And over the past several weeks, we've been exploring the various aspects of the path. So we started with

1:12.6

the territory of the path that we would call wisdom. And that entails skillful view,

1:20.3

skillful intention. And that's kind of like getting the map itself. You have a map now that

1:27.1

gives you a better understanding of where you are, where you're

1:30.3

trying to go, and the map helps you to see clearly what is it that leads to suffering

1:36.6

and what is it that leads to greater inner peace.

1:40.6

So that's the wisdom portion of the path.

1:43.1

Then we talked about ethical conduct, which entails skillful speech, skillful action,

1:50.9

skillful livelihood is what we talked about last week.

1:54.1

And if wisdom is the map, then our ethics and our conduct are kind of like the vehicle that we're building to travel on this path.

2:04.7

And, you know, the vehicle that allows us to move through the world more compassionately with more integrity.

2:14.2

And then we get through the portion of the path that is like the final territory of the map, that's mental discipline.
