The fundamental question that these parables ask is this,

is it possible for someone who has fallen away from the fate of baptized child

to be brought to repentance? And the answer is yes, a thousand times yes, it has to be yes.

Or I'm damned. So are you.

But if we as earthly parents love our children in spite of the fact that they rebel

and maybe wander from home, how much more does the Father's love for us in Christ Jesus never

cease? That is the birthright that you and I have been given in our baptism.

The hymn, what is the world to me? That rhetorical question, of course, compared to riches in Christ,

the world is nothing. And yet, in the gospel reading for this coming Sunday, according to the one

your electionary, Jesus tells a parable about a dishonest manager who's worried because he's

going to be put out of his stewardship and the master in the parable commends the dishonest manager

for his shrewdness. And it appears that Jesus commends him as well. What do we make of that?
