Welcome to the happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. When I was an undergraduate at university studying psychology, one of my professors,

my psychology professor, was going through a divorce. He was a very nice man, but I'm sure we can

all imagine that it was very difficult for him.

I remember him telling me one day that when he struggled with depression and got stuck in

thoughts, negative thoughts, he'd go for a run, and he didn't like running.

So for him, the running was a way to discourage his negative thinking

and it helped him feel better.

And I have to admit, because I knew him throughout the entire divorce that he handled it quite well and he was able to find his happiness flow in life again.

Exercise has always been a part of my life too.

When I was younger, of course I did sports,

but I learned about at the age of 14

the not just doing sports but actually doing things

to keep my body healthy

was really good for my mental state too.

So since I was a teenager, I've been pretty consistent about doing something physical every day.

It's changed over the years, but these days it entails four main things.

Every day I usually do some yoga.

I often go to a yoga class and I do some walking.

I love to walk outdoors.

And then three days a week I go to the gym and lift weights and a couple days a week I go for a mile swim.

It will probably change over the years again but that's what I'm doing these days.
