Summary

Pope Francis recently stated that the “plurality and diversity of religions…are an expression of the wise and divine will by which he created human beings.” Some have sought to rescue the pope’s theology by saying this refers to God’s “permissive will” but Dr. Taylor Marshall and Timothy Gordon look at the Spanish and Italian versions to show that this isn’t the case. They also examine the recent statements by Cardinal Müller and Bishop Athanasius Schneider regarding this theological error. As we will show, the Spanish is “una sabia voluntad divina con la que Dios creo a los seres humanos”. The Pope identifies it as the “divine wise will” which which “he created humans beings.” This is definitely not the permissive will but the active will of God.
