we talked about the movement of federal general George Morgan's 7th Division

from Cumberland Gap up through the rugged mountains of Eastern Kentucky to the

Ohio River. Meanwhile about 200 miles to the west after abandoning Munfordville

on September 20th 1862 Braxton Bragg's Confederate Army of the Mississippi

headed northeast 40 miles to Bardstown. Bragg expected to resupply his troops at

Bardstown and link up with Kirby Smith's Confederate Army of Kentucky. It was a

tough march to Bardstown and not just because many of the rebel soldiers

reportedly were without shoes by this point in the campaign and were going

barefoot. The drought and heat added to the men's miseries as did the

feeling in the ranks that the army had missed a fantastic opportunity at
