76-year-old Sybil Brumley was a beloved member of her community, a devout Baptist who was

heavily involved in church activities, and the kind of woman everyone described as being

like a second mother.

Then one chilly spring morning in April of 1997, after failing to show up for work, she

was reported missing.

Investigators found a troubling scene, plants and potting soil were scattered around the

porch, the front door had been smashed in, and there were clear indications of a struggle

inside.

Initially, believed to have been a robbery gone wrong, detectives were perplexed to

learn that nothing appeared to have been stolen.

As her family struggled to try and develop new leads and to keep the case in the spotlight,

researchers continued to hit dead ends with each new tip they followed.

While many believe Sybil had likely been targeted by someone she knew, others wondered

if perhaps she had become yet another victim whose fate may lie in an eerie stretch of

land between Texas and Louisiana known as the Dead Zone.
