SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show! “I’ve always wanted to work for myself but the only positions available are hospital employed?!” “The interview went great, but do I really know if the culture here fits me?” You might have more of these questions now that you’re getting close or are starting to look for a job. All right, everyone. So this is Dr. Knee here. I actually have a special guest from provider

0:06.0

solutions and development team. But we're going to be talking about what it's like to work for yourself,

0:11.4

what it's like to be a locum's and kind of flush that out more because we know that right now

0:16.5

we're in the midst of a lot of fellows, a lot of fifth year or chief residents, whatever specialty

0:23.2

that you may be in, they are looking for jobs. And it's really important that they know what

0:29.1

options are available to them, right? There are different ways in which you can work with a hospital,

0:33.7

with a clinic. It's not just a traditional way, hence docs outside the box. We're going to

0:37.6

tell you guys about the non-traditional ways in which you can work. So I just want to start off by

0:42.2

telling my quick story about doing locums. So I did my residency in general surgery. I did five years

0:59.9

trauma center.

1:00.5

That was a great experience also.

1:02.5

But what I started to notice is right around the January, I'd say December, January timeframe,

1:08.4

I really was in the midst of interviewing at different places. And I really felt

1:12.6

uncomfortable interviewing at these places for five to eight hours a day and then deciding that I was

1:20.1

going to sign a three year or five year contract just off of that. Just for me, that was a problem.

1:24.9

I think for other people, that's not that big of a deal. But for me, that was a problem. And during that time, I was talking to my girlfriend at the time, who's now my wife, and I was just saying, you know, I just feel really uncomfortable doing this. And she said, well, why don't you consider Locums? And I had no clue what that was. She educated me on what it was, and I quickly poohed it. And I poo-pooed it mainly

1:45.5

because the rest of my fellows weren't doing it. And that really, to me, looking back, is really

1:51.1

not the smartest decision to make, right? You're making decisions based off of what other people

1:56.1

will think instead of, you know, making a decision for yourself. So after, you know, several other interviews
