| 0:00.0 | What's up guys welcome back to another episode of the Rock Your Brand podcast and today I am fired up because we're going to go in a little bit of a different direction and it's something that I am really really interested in but also I know how important this is and what I'm talking about is creating headlines or titles for your emails or for your YouTube videos or for your YouTube videos. |
| 0:30.0 | Your Facebook posts Facebook ads when coming up with really good headlines that hook the person that is scanning because we are you know we're just busy and we're distracted very easily and to have a really good headline in an email like I said anywhere where you're trying to get people's attention it's a really really good skill to learn and I'm always interested in learning more well I am having a guest on today. |
| 0:59.0 | His name is Jake Thomas and he runs a company called creator hooks and what's cool about that is and you're going to hear his whole story and how the company was even formed but you're going to hear how he got introduced because he was working with a it's funny a fishing company that was doing a lot of content a lot of YouTube content a lot of social media content and I'm going to let him explain the whole story and everything |
| 1:27.0 | but that's how he got introduced to this and it really is interesting on how it evolved for him and now he's teaching others and he's consulting others on how to really create good hooks for your subject lines |
| 1:43.0 | whether it's like I said an email YouTube video social media post it's so important so I think you're going to enjoy this I enjoyed it and selfishly I wanted to have mine because it was a way for me to pick his brain and be able to learn a little bit more about it some of you may or may not have noticed but I'm starting to get back into the YouTube game |
| 2:04.0 | and I'm starting to experiment with some of what he's teaching and so far the results are looking good so we'll see time will tell probably going to have him come back on and we're going to dig into some other areas and also I'm going to give him some updates on what I've been doing since listening to him and using some of his resources. |
| 2:22.0 | So guys sit back relax enjoy and get ready because I think this is going to be very very beneficial and helpful for you in no matter what you are working on it is going to help you because this is a huge skill and I think you're really really important for all. |
| 2:37.0 | Welcome to another podcast episode on the rock your brand podcast and today I am fired up because we've got a special guest we've got someone that well I had him on kind of selfishly to be quite honest with you. |
| 2:51.0 | I've got to pick his brain a little bit on this YouTube thing that I've been trying to kind of work on for years but really just about getting people's attention using good headlines you know good clickable you know subjects and yeah I'm super excited to have you Jake welcome to the podcast man how you doing. |
| 3:13.0 | I'm doing excellent Scott however you thanks for having me yeah man I'm doing great I'm really I was really looking forward to this this this one here and again like I said selfishly like this is having a podcast let's call a time out like having a podcast is a great thing because you can have people come on and kind of coach you for free and then you get to you know use that information but then you also get to share it it's pretty cool I love it. |
| 3:34.0 | I have considered starting a podcast for that very same reason dude I'm telling you and it allows you to connect with people you know what I mean like I think Steve Chu our mutual friend you were recently on his podcast and the whole reason he started his podcast was just to say hey I've got a podcast want to come on and talk like and he's been doing it a little bit longer than me I think he's been I think he's over seven years. |
| 3:58.0 | So and now he's got sponsorships and everything so he's he's just cranking right now but anyway I wanted to get you on man you've got a great story and I want people to realize like this is going to be yes about you know YouTube if you want to if you want to like grow on YouTube and all this up we'll dig into that but it's really about getting attention on social media getting attention on a Google you know article that you write or an email that you write like all those things but I also think. |
| 4:28.0 | It's cool for people to listen in on this and and hear how you turned a skill or created a skill and then now you are making that your business of like helping and being a coach to help people with their businesses with implementing this which is just awesome. |
| 4:46.4 | So why don't we start there how did this whole thing start how did Jake get into and be all nerdy about you know like YouTube titles and stuff and viral videos and all that stuff. |
| 4:54.5 | Yeah yeah so real quick before we dive into that story so I've been using these strategies to grow on Twitter to break number one in search on Google also to increase my CTR and my open rate on email subject lines and on YouTube so it's just like just the psychology of what gets people's attention and what gets people to click and you know we're just we're talking to humans when we're creating content doesn't matter what platform you on you are getting the attention and talking to humans so all of this will be applicable no matter what you're doing. |
| 5:24.5 | So yeah so a couple of years ago I got a job is like is my dream job I was working for a fishing YouTube channel and I was running their Facebook ads doing the little bit of email marketing doing the blog but I was also running their YouTube channel and my boss was a really really good copywriter he's he's the best boss ever had he was great guy great copywriter and the standards are set pretty high and I did not know how to write a good YouTube title. |
| 5:53.5 | And he couldn't he was really good at himself but he wasn't a great teacher of like hey here is how you get people's attention or maybe he wasn't I was just like I was just like too dumb to understand it but but it just it wasn't clicking for me and I almost got fired and then I finally clicked when he was on a hunting podcast and he was like hey they did a new be hunting gear and that worked really well for them why don't we do new be fishing gear so we did that and it was our best part. |
| 6:23.5 | And it was a great podcast like for the last like two months and it wasn't anything like groundbreaking right like new be fishing gear isn't like shocking or like odds firing or anything but it was just worded in a way that was really attractive to people and so that was kind of like the big moment where it clicked it's like oh I don't need to just make up some crazy insane title out of the blue I can just model what works to and that it's kind of like a shortcut to success. |
| 6:49.5 | That things like started taking off for us I became much more confident and fast and better at writing good YouTube titles and then every morning we would have every Monday morning we'd have our content meeting and so it was me the kind of marketing guy and then we had a bunch of fishing coaches and they were the ones doing the fun stuff going out and fishing and filming them catching cool fish and I was sending home turning all that putting all that on the internet but I would talk to them every Monday morning and be like hey you hear we're like five. |
| 7:19.5 | We have videos or 10 videos that work for other channels why don't we use these for our channel so like you know if it was like a marketing one would be like you know I regret you know I regret sending this video so or if I regret sending this email so I might be like hey well why don't we say I regret using this lure so it's kind of the same thing but just different and modeled for our for our channel so I did that every Monday morning for a couple months and it worked well for us and then I was like hey. |
| 7:49.5 | This is working well for us I wonder if it would work well for other people so I sent out kind of like I just made like a Google doc of the little newsletter that I was considering starting of like hey you know here are videos that worked you hear how you can use them for your channel so I sent out a Google docs like 50 or 100 people like 10 people are like this is this is really cool you should definitely do it so I started it and and then it just kind of slowly grew from there people seem to like it it's been helpful for them but the coolest thing is that I was |
| 8:19.5 | doing at least selfishly for me is now I'm like forced to intentionally study what works on YouTube and what goes viral every single week so I've learned a ton probably more than my subscribers although they many of them have sent me screenshots of one out of 10 videos or you know thank me for what they've learned but yeah it's been it's been really cool and a really fun journey and and it's growing it's growing pretty pretty well now I'm really excited yeah |
