Summary

As 2025 draws to a close, Thomas and Aimen take an unconventional tour of the Islamic world — looking beyond the usual headlines to the under-the-radar shifts that happened in 2025, with the potential to shape 2026 and beyond. They discuss: Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger forming the Alliance of Sahel States and what a new Sahel bloc might mean The geopolitical ‘cluster fuck’ of the Sudanese civil war The European Union’s re-entry into Central Asia The Gabala Summit and the rising Turkic axis How Bangladesh is diversifying away from India Southern Thailand’s Malay-Muslim insurgency and why it’s so rarely discussed In Iraq, Kata’ib Hezbollah and the breakdown of state sovereignty Join the Conflicted Community here: https://conflicted.supportingcast.fm/  Find us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MHconflicted And Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MHconflicted And Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/conflictedpod Learn more about your ad choices. Hello, dear listeners and Happy New Year. Happy New Year to you, Eamon.

0:05.5

Happy New Year to you, Thomas.

0:07.0

It's not exactly New Year. I mean, not yet. New Year's Day is 48 hours away. And so,

0:13.0

Amon, instead of ringing in 2026, let's ring out 2025, a year of momentous change across the Middle East and the whole Islamic world.

0:24.6

But then, what year isn't full of momentous change for the miserable East, huh?

0:29.2

Indeed. What isn't?

0:31.2

You know, Amin, looking back at 2025, it feels like the world only paid attention to a very small part of the Islamic world.

0:39.3

0:46.3

Those are hugely important places, and those were huge stories.

0:50.3

But when I started digging into everything else that happened, I realized there were all these really important shifts going on elsewhere.

0:58.1

Places most people probably didn't even think about, in Africa, in Central Asia, even somewhere like Thailand.

1:05.2

Indeed.

1:05.9

So I thought, instead of looking back at 2025 by focusing on the usual hotspots,

1:11.7

why don't we take people on a bit of an unconventional tour of the Islamic world

1:16.0

to some places where significant events occurred but never made the headlines?

1:20.8

It's always those events that go below the radar

1:24.6

that would later come back and bat you in the backside. So that's

1:29.3

why it's important to pay attention. And these events are not isolated. They all touch on the

1:35.0

same deeper questions we keep coming back to on this show. Who has power? Who's losing power?

1:41.0

How states hold together? How identity shift, how new alliances form, and old ones

1:46.8

fall apart. Let's get right into it.

1:56.7

So, Amon, the place I want to start this 2025 retrospective with is the Sahill.
