at an exceptional level, and I'm thrilled to have taught them.

Jim we're talking with the writing prize winners today which is a treat for us not just because we're writers ourselves

But also because you've actually had these students in your class as you mentioned.

That's absolutely true.

And unlike the photo and music prize winners who were fed to us by Columbia faculty,

my colleagues in those other departments, these were my students.

So I had them in class each week for 14 weeks, either reviewing the arts or cultural criticism

and the arts.

And then I put a list of contenders together.

I fed it to you.

I didn't want to be biased.
