Summary

Edition #1000

Today we mark our 1000th episode by looking back to the way things were 10 years ago when this show launched. Come with me to a time when The Young Turks hadn’t taken over YouTube, Rachel Maddow didn’t have a show on MSNBC and Al Franken wasn’t yet a Senator

Now, maybe you noticed and maybe you didn't, but today is the 1,000th episode of Bestivaleth,

0:17.7

so it's going to be a little bit different than normal. We're going to hear some familiar voices,

0:22.2

some young Turks, and some Rachel Maddo, and some Tom Hartman, and then some other voices that you

0:27.4

can't even hear on the radio anymore. And here's the story of what's going on.

0:34.0

Six or eight months ago, I realized, oh geez, 1,000th episode is coming up. I wonder what I should do

0:40.1

about that, and then I didn't think much about it. And then like a month ago, I thought, oh boy,

0:47.3

it's really coming up fast. I should probably do something about it. And the only idea I had,

0:52.6

it's like the most obvious thing, is like, well, do the best of the best of the left.

days ago, I thought, oh man, I really should do something. Maybe I'll do what the show looked and

1:18.1

sounded like, and what was going on almost exactly 10 years ago. Because it just so happens that

1:24.0

it took me almost exactly 10 years to make exactly 1,000 episodes. I started the show in January

1:30.1

2006. And so what I've done over those past few days is I have listened to the first four or

1:38.0

five months of this show. And I pulled out some of my favorite clips from the beginning of 2006,

1:46.1

just to give you a snapshot of what was going on then, and how things felt. And that'll allow you

1:52.8

to sort of compare to today. And it's just sort of a fun way to mark this occasion. So to begin with,

1:59.6

we're going to hear from the young Turks. They were the first show I ever promoted on Best of

2:04.2

the Left. And apparently it's worked because they now have like two and a half billion views on YouTube.

2:11.2

Well, this first clip, it's just that they're having a conversation about the media. But it so
