| 0:32.3 | When I was in high school, 11th grade, I took a world religion course. |
| 0:37.6 | We were introduced all the most of the major religions. |
| 0:42.2 | And when we got to Buddhism, it was really quick that I realized that this was probably |
| 0:48.2 | the religion that was at the bottom of my list of what I would ever want to be part of. |
| 0:57.2 | How sad is it beginning for a talk? |
| 1:01.2 | It's focused. |
| 1:03.2 | It's all about suffering and it's all about getting rid of desire. |
| 1:07.6 | And in my mind, what made life worth living was pursuing what I desired. |
| 1:13.0 | I was kind of a sensationalist and I was seeking thrills and kind of a hedonistic way |
| 1:19.6 | in whatever relationships, nature, drugs, adventures, whatever it was. |
| 1:25.2 | So the idea of getting rid of desires just didn't sit so well because I wanted to be happy |
| 1:31.2 | and I still do and we all do. |
| 1:33.8 | I just had some misunderstandings about it. |
| 1:37.2 | So it took a few years, plus some more suffering. |
| 1:40.7 | Till I started getting a deeper understanding of what it really meant to be happy, true happiness. |
| 1:51.4 | So in a nutshell, Buddhism does not say get rid of desires. |
| 1:56.3 | It really is saying, see if it's possible to let go of the grasping because it hurts, |
| 2:02.0 | causes suffering. |
| 2:03.0 | In fact, the grasping actually gets in the way of experiencing what we really desire. |
| 2:07.7 | It's kind of like that. |
