But let me say to you tonight that whenever you are engaged in work, that surge humanity

You are reminding not only Memphis, but you are reminding the nation that it is a crime

for people to live in this rich nation and receive starvation wage.

I actually studied economics in college and for a while I thought about doing a PhD.

My intro economics class was taught by a guy named Martin Feldstein, who had been Ronald Reagan's chief economics advisor.

I got you hooked, huh?

Actually, what got me hooked was arguing with him.

Anyway, he argued against raising the minimum wage and he's done that for decades.

He makes the classic argument that a higher minimum wage is a terrible idea because it inevitably reduces employment.

It is literally the textbook example of how well-intentioned government policy can make everyone worse off.
