| 0:50.0 | And now, I'm against it for other reasons now, because I think it's counterproductive, |
| 0:54.6 | because it reinforces some of those stereotypes. |
| 0:57.6 | But the first part I was totally wrong about. |
| 1:01.2 | Like, look, in our context, our class president happened to be Black, |
| 1:04.8 | Cyril Johnson, and I thought, well, look, I'm in the same town as Cyril, |
| 1:07.9 | I'm in the same exact situation. |
| 1:09.5 | You know, why in the world would he, should he get an advantage in applying to schools, etc. |
| 1:14.1 | But what I didn't understand is that those were the 1980s, |
| 1:17.6 | and we were only about 20 years removed from Black people being lynched in the South. |
| 1:23.8 | Everybody didn't live in my context. |
| 1:25.7 | They lived in a completely different context, |
| 1:28.5 | where being Black was an enormous disadvantage, |
