Summary

Recently at a conference, a man handed me a letter from his deconstructed son. I recall him saying, “Please use this in any way that can help.” I decided to talk through the points in the letter with the intention of helping families understand their loved ones who are in deconstruction, and to bring clarity to some of the issues that are so common among deconstructionists.

0:26.9	with clarity, kindness, and truth. You know, one of the things I encounter quite often when I travel
0:32.7	and speak are people who have loved ones who are either in deconstruction or they have all the way
0:39.6	deconstructed out of Christianity. And in many cases, there are strange relationships. In some cases,
0:45.7	there are broken relationships where the deconstructed loved one has deemed the Christian toxic
0:52.2	because of their beliefs and then either won't let them see the grandkids or just have
0:59.6	strained relationships. And so it's something that's really on my heart. In fact, my co-author
1:04.4	Tim Barnett of Red Pen logic and I have just finished writing a book on deconstruction that's
1:09.6	going to be coming out in January. And that is one of the things that was really heavy on our hearts
1:14.6	as we wrote this book was to help people who have loved ones in deconstruction. And so recently at
1:20.6	a conference, a man walked up to me and gave me this piece of paper right here. And in his case,
1:26.6	he still has a relationship with his son who has deconstructed out of the faith. But his son
1:32.2	wrote him a letter and basically said, these are my biggest issues with Christianity. And so this man
1:38.1	handed this to me and he said, please use this. However, you want to to maybe help other people with
1:43.6	some of the issues. And as I read through the letter and I'm going to read it in a moment,
1:47.3	what I discovered is that this really nails what Tim and I encountered in our research. As many
1:53.6	of the reasons people deconstruct and the way that they're thinking about certain things. So what I
1:57.6	want to do today is read through some of these points, maybe give a perspective on how a conversation
2:04.5	might go if you were to talk about some of these points. And maybe to help you, I know there's
2:09.3	probably many people watching and listening today who have loved ones in deconstruction. And you're
2:15.7	feeling a little bit anxious about it. You are not sure you don't want to say the wrong thing.
