Summary

An awful lot has happened in the last 100 years or so. In fact, when you look at how much went on in the 20th century, it's amazing it didn't take longer than that. In this extract from his new book Al Murray takes a close look at the Battle of Britain. We Have Ways has a membership club which includes a live version of the podcast streamed on the internet each Thursday evening. There are also five free audiobooks on the site. Hello there, Almari here. I'd just like to take a moment of your time to tell you all

0:14.1

about an incredible, exciting new book. The last hundred years give or take and all that.

0:20.5

By me, Almari, a journey, a misremembered journey through the 20th century. Now, I don't

0:26.4

know how many of you are familiar with Sellers and Yateman's epic classic comedy history book,

0:31.2

1066 and all that. Well, I certainly am. And when I was asked to write this book, I said,

0:35.2

yeah, sure, I'd love to. But what I've made sure I haven't done is tried to pastiche their style

0:40.7

or do a book their way. Because basically that would be impossible. And also, I'm slightly

0:45.5

big-headed enough to think, well, I'll put it through my own comedy grinder, my humorous outlook.

0:50.8

We've got a little extra for you, though, today. For a We Have Ways listers, the middle section of

0:55.7

1:01.2

things that James Holland and I have spoken about along the way. This book's out now. It's 1499,

1:06.6

although you know what it's like these days. That's what it says on the sleeve, but it's probably not

1:10.9

that much. It's published with Quercus. It's out now. It's in all good book shops and on Amazon,

1:16.7

it's incomplete. It's biased. And it's only really got the stuff in it I was particularly interested in.

1:22.2

I hope you enjoy. Here's a short extract about the Battle of Britain.

1:29.4

Most critical event of all number four. Britain holds on.

1:36.0

After eight months of twiddling thumbs on the Western front, a general sense of allied

1:40.0

torpor and a botched attempt to keep Norway out of German hands. It all kicked off properly

1:44.7

on the 10th of May 1940 when the Germans invaded France and the Lowlands.

1:49.5

Put simply, they organized most of their tanks into one single punch, which came through the

1:53.5

Ardenne Forest that the French had decided were impossible to tanks. Impossible, they said,

1:59.1

they're impossible! The Germans had chosen to try to invade France at Cédan, coming down from
