Hello, I'm Alicia McCarthy,

and this is today in Parliament from BBC Radio 4 for Friday the 20th of June,

where MPs back assisted dying in England and Wales.

The eyes to the right, 314, the notes to the left, 291.

The vote comes after another day of impassioned debate on the principles of the bill.

We should support this desperately needed reform that is rigorous, practical and safe,

and is rooted in the principles that should underpin any legislation,

compassion, justice and human dignity.

But opponents fear this marks a big change in society.

When the state takes a life, even with consent,

that is a huge shift in the relationship between the individual and the state.

Now it's over to the House of Lords.

So what will peers make of it?

It's unlikely to be a sort of rubber stamping process or an outright reject.

MPs have narrowly backed a bill to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales.

It passed its final Commons hurdle by 23 votes,

a much smaller majority than when MPs first approved it late last year.

Since then, there have been hours of debate and scrutiny,

which saw many changes to the legislation.
