| 1:29.9 | As president, expansion became a primary goal of his administration. Now, to be fair, the Jeffersonians did not have a monopoly |
| 1:36.1 | on expansion. It was also a federalist policy, although the federalists had only limited success |
| 1:42.6 | with it. The expansion of the nation into the Northwest, what is today called the Midwest, |
| 1:47.8 | states like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, was an orderly experience thanks to something called |
| 1:52.6 | the Northwest Ordinance, one of the positives which came out of the Confederation government, |
| 1:58.0 | or it's usually seen as positive. |

| 2:03.2 | until the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, and I'm pretty sure they did not necessarily see this |
| 2:09.0 | as positive. While the expansion into the old Northwest wasn't an easy affair, thanks to the presence |
| 2:16.2 | of Native Americans, it was made even more difficult |
| 2:19.3 | in the South by the fact that Spain had a presence there. Basically, they were in Florida and also |
| 2:26.1 | remember the Louisiana Territory. However, the purchase of Louisiana would mark the end of |
| 2:32.9 | European expansion in North America |
