Summary

A record number of bills targeting trans people in the U.S. have passed this year.

In February, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott issued a directive, classifying gender-affirming care as child abuse.

1A recently traveled to Austin to speak with trans kids and their families as part of the Remaking America Series.

0:13.4	More than 155 bills were filed in state legislatures across the country according to a Washington

0:21.0	And according to NPR, about 86% of legislation aimed at trans people filed in the last two
0:26.6	years targets children.
0:29.0	trans kids are kids and you got to showcase the sufferings that people understand, but
0:33.6	you got to showcase the joy and happiness that people are also experiencing.

0:40.6	We changed their name to protect their identity.

0:45.0	We spoke with Emma when we traveled to Austin, Texas as part of our Remaking America series.
0:50.6	It explores Americans, trust and institutions and the health of our democracy.
0:55.2	We also met Rory, a trans teenager living in Austin.
0:58.9	He told us what gender affirming care meant to him.
1:01.7	I just didn't know how terrible I felt about myself until I got to, you know, become
1:08.4	myself and see how strong I could be and how, you know, beautiful I could become.
1:15.0	And I know it breaks my heart that any child could get that taken away from them.
1:21.7	And I hope that no child ever does have to go through that.
1:26.1	And that was Rory, a trans teenager whose name has also been changed to protect his identity.
