Hi, I'm Helen Tupper. And I'm Sarah Ellis. And you're listening to the Squiggly Careers podcast

0:06.6

where each week Sarah and I come together to talk about a different topic to do with work

0:11.0

and discuss practical ideas for action to help you find your way through your increasingly

0:16.0

and our increasingly squiggly world of work. And today we're going to be talking about overwhelm and how to

0:22.4

overcome overwhelm at work. So you can probably tell how we're both feeling right now. I was about to say

0:26.9

the irony of recording this topic. When you suggested it, I was like, yes, this is a good topic to cover.

0:32.2

Let's let's get into this, please. Well, let's face it. I think we originally started the podcast really for self-help to help each other.

0:38.5

Yeah, it is all still self-help, isn't it?

0:39.9

Yeah, and I was preparing for this particular topic and just thinking,

0:43.1

I mean, we are literally doing this for selfish reasons right now because we really need to know this stuff.

0:47.7

And I think lots of people are feeling this way and we've noticed it in our workshops over the last few weeks. So we were like, actually, do you know what, we've never really done a kind of deep dive into overwhelm. So what we're going to do today is talk a bit about

0:58.4

what it is and how it gets in our way, though I suspect most of us know that and we don't need to

1:04.0

spend too long on it. And what we've come up with is we thought we would go really practical today.

1:09.7

So we've come up with 10 ideas for action on what to do

1:12.9

in those moments where you do get overwhelmed at work because I think, yes, we can work on how to

1:19.7

prevent it, but it's also probably always going to happen some of the time. And we can probably

1:24.9

predict that. At some point, we are just going to feel a bit

1:27.7

overwhelmed. And I think it's almost what you do in those moments and the tools and the tactics

1:33.0

that you can learn that can sort of help you find your way through that feeling of overwhelm

1:38.2

to the other side as quickly and as positively as possible. So I'm sure there's lots of more

1:43.7

psychology that we could chat through.

1:45.1

But yeah, we've gone really, really practical for everybody.
