Summary

I interview American cartoonist and children’s book illustrator Ben Hatke about storytelling and graphic novels. We talk about the evolution of stories, how we make them our own, how modern superhero comics compare with ancient mythology, whether the story of Christ stands apart and above other stories, and whether it has a monopoly on certain storytelling tropes. Support the God's'Dog graphic novel: https://www.godsdog.com I said Ben’s book, Julia’s House Goes Home, will come out this month, but we actually recorded this in early October. So you can already buy it: Julia's House Goes Home (19 Oct 2021): https://www.amazon.com/Julias-House-Goes-Home-Hatke/dp/1250769329/ Original video: https://youtu.be/OCl_UphiIR4 Support this podcast: Website: https://thesymbolicworld.com/support/ Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/pageauvideos Subscribestar: https://www.subscribestar.com/jonathan-pageau Paypal: http://www.paypal.me/JonathanPageau Join the conversation: Unofficial Facebook discussion group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1989208418065298/ The Symbolic World Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSymbolicWorld/ Social media links: Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TheSymbolicWorld Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/pageaujonathan Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonathan.pageau

So hello, everybody. I am sitting here with Ben Hatke. Ben is a best-selling author, artist. He is

0:06.7

mostly known for his series, Zita the Space Girl and also Mighty Jack. I was introduced to his

0:14.2

work by Andrew Gould, whose opinion is always unfailing to me. Whatever he suggests to me, I

0:19.8

immediately look at it. And I found in his stories

0:22.9

with my kids as well, just a wonderful, boisterous storytelling, deep understanding of storytelling

0:28.3

and of myth and of fairy tale, but also connection to science fiction, just very well-rounded

0:34.2

storytelling. So if you have kids, even as adults, I enjoyed them reading them as

0:38.2

adults myself. And so I'm really happy to be able to talk to him. He has a new book coming out next

0:44.1

month called Julia's House Goes Home, which is a third part of a series of picture books. So you can

0:49.2

also check that out and make sure to get that as the month's coming along. So I'm looking forward to this

0:54.4

conversation.

1:10.5

Thank you. This is Jonathan Pajot and welcome to the symbolic world.

1:25.2

So, Ben, thanks for, thanks for agreeing to talk to me.

1:29.2

I was a little surprised that you agreed because, you know, you're kind of a big shot, I guess, in the art world.

1:32.3

But I was really, and I found out that your wife,

1:35.8

at least you and your wife have watched my videos

1:38.2

and that right kind of follows me.

1:39.4

So that was a very interesting connection for me.

1:42.2

Yes, you were a big shot in our household, apparently.

1:45.6

Well, I'm saying apparently.

1:49.8

No, but I mean, like, I've often walked into the kitchen and been like, oh, it's Jonathan Bajos voice again.
