Summary

The incoming Trump administration has started announcing some of the picks for the incoming Cabinet. Somehow, they're worse than you could have imagined. We break down some of the unsavory characters who might be making policy in Trump's second term with political reporter for Semafor, David Weigel.

Weigel also explains how the right wing media ecosystem has moved away from TV and onto the internet. Right wing and right wing-adjacent programming is dominating YouTube and podcasts. How did they build such a network? And how do Democrats counterprogram those voices?

Hey, everybody. We got a great one today, you know, for a change. David Weigel, who writes for Semaphore, is my guest today.

Here to talk about some of President-elect Trump's nominations for his administration.

Some really odd ones topping off that list. Matt Gates for Attorney

0:24.8

General. Gates went to law school. That's the closest thing I can get to as a qualification for

0:30.5

him being the top law enforcement official in our nation. But that's it. But there's a long list of reasons not to confirm Gates.

He resigned from the House this week because the House was going to decide whether to release

0:46.9

a report that Gates allegedly had sex with a 17-year-old girl while he was in Congress and

0:52.8

she was in high school.

But because he resigned the House, the House can no longer release the report because he's no longer a member. But there is some suggestion that the report might somehow leak.

Hope that happens. After I had spoken with David, news came out that Trump had also named Robert F.

1:13.7

Kennedy Jr. to be head of Health and Human Services, which runs, among other things, Medicare and

1:20.6

Medicaid, and the Food and Drug Administration, the Center for Disease Control, and the National

1:26.4

Institutes of Health. It is huge. RFK Jr. is a

1:31.0

vaccine skeptic, and for that and other reasons should not be put anywhere near the Department

1:37.9

of Health and Human Services. David and I discussed Trump's other loony nominations, Tulsi

1:43.6

Gabbard, to be the director of

1:46.0

national intelligence that would put her in charge of the CIA, the national security agency,

1:51.8

the defense intelligence agency, with no experience in intelligence operations. In addition,

1:58.9

she has echoed Russian propaganda, has traded in conspiracy theories

2:03.0

about Ukraine. She met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who's committed war crimes. This is a

2:10.4

horrific and dangerous idea. Oh, and the my-pillal guy got the Commerce Department.

2:18.0

We discuss a few other matters.
