LA this weekend, they can just about forget it.

So says Warren Giles, the man who knows his baseball pretty well.

They thought you're on Johnny Bench at Grand Slam almost in each of two games against Atlanta Thursday

in leading the Reds to a sweep while the Dodgers were blanking San Francisco,

leaving Cincinnati three and a half games back of the Dodgers in the National League West.

Giles, who is general manager and president of the Reds for 15 years,

and then president of the National League for another 18 years, retiring in 1969.

Still fry at age 77, Childe takes in as many red games as he can.

A diehard Cincinnati fan, he says, I still have red blood in my veins, pun intended.

But Giles says the Red Dodger game tonight, Saturday and Sunday in Los Angeles, could mean the end of the line for Cincinnati's uphill battle to win the West Championship.

I say if they don't win two of the three, then their chances are pretty well washed up.

I just don't think the Reds will pass the Dodgers by beating other clubs.

No matter what the outcome of this weekend series, Giles figures both clubs still will win 100 games this season.

This kind of pennant race with two great teams thrills my baseball instinct, he says.

I still think of the Reds as my team, and I'm excited about it.
