Members of the Youth Political Party, or Yippee's, as they're called, have gathered in downtown

Chicago for a week of demonstrations leading up to the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

The Yippees have come to protest the Vietnam War and the Democratic establishment.

Moderate Democratic Party leaders have been pushing the candidacy of Vice President

Hubert Humphrey, but the Yippees have gathered here in Civic Center Plaza to put forward

a candidate of their own.

The crowd cheers as Jerry Rubin, the leader of the Yippee, stands by the Picasso sculpture

in Civic Center Plaza and makes a speech.

Ladies and gentlemen and everyone in between, I have an announcement to make.

What is it?

I'll stop interrupting and I'll tell you.

As you all know, we're gathered here to protest the criminal immoral occupation of Vietnam

by the American War Machine.

And we're here to protest that same war machine's assault on our black brothers and sisters

here at home.

But as you also know, there's something else very important happening this week.

Yes, you have very important, but not that.

I'm sure you're all aware of a little thing called the Democratic National Convention.

Well this coming week, the Democratic Party is going to choose their nominee for this

year's election.
