It's January 2, 1953 in a Congressional office on Capitol Hill in Washington.

A senator from Minnesota, Hubert Humvery, stands nervously outside the office of his colleague,

a senator from Texas, Lyndon Baines Johnson.

Johnson, or LBJ, as he's known, is about to make a big play for a big position, Senate

Minority Leader, and LBJ wants Humphrey's support.

In a group meeting earlier today, LBJ asks Humphrey to back him, but Humphrey declined,

telling LBJ he plans to vote for Montana Senator James Murray.

Now Humphrey has been summoned back to Johnson's office for a one-on-one.

As he knocks on the door, Humphrey braces himself for what many of LBJ's colleagues call

the Johnson Treatment.

Now who is it?

Lyndon it's me, Hubert.

Quick stand it out there and come on in, Hubert.

Now, I know we spoke earlier, Hubert, but I wanted to talk to you alone in private, have

a seat.

As Humphrey sits, Johnson invades his personal space.

He slides in close, mere inches from Humphrey's face.

Now let me tell you something, Hubert.

You're depending on votes you don't have.

How many votes do you think you got from Murray?
