It's warm-up time.

The games are slowly creeping up on Yankee homeland slugger Roger Maris.

Maris hit number 57 yesterday against the Tigers

and his bid to top Dave Ruth's mark of 60. But Maris has only four games to tie or break the

record number under a 154 game schedule set down by baseball commissioner 4 to Fred.

The Yankees play a single game in Detroit today, then move on to Baltimore, four or three games

series.

Teammate Mickey Mantle has 53 homers and need seven to tie and eight to break the 1927 record that has lasted so long. 20 years ago today, a young batter stepped to the plate at St. Louis

rather and sacked a double for his first major league hit. And to Pittsburgh today, that same

player will be honored by players, fans, and national league officials

before the card pirate game.

Stan Musial, now 40 years old, will be observing his 20th season in the major leagues.

Musial has been getting hits, plenty of them ever since that first double.

He has been National League batting champions seven times and has a lifetime home run mark of 442. Second only to the late Malad who hit 511. The home run chase attracted the most attention, but the Yankees were slowly inching toward another American League vunnered. At a week's end, the Yankees had a nine and one-half game lead over the second place, Detroit. Cincinnati move four and a half games ahead of

the National League chase and the Redsback. Rather racked up five in a row this past week while the

second place Los Angeles Dodgers lost five out of their last eight games to slip behind.

The New York Cincinnati World Series would be the first between the two clubs since 1941.
