And when he had hit his second one in the National League ahead, it looked as if Archie Vaughn would be the hero of the 1941 All-Star game.

It took Ted Williams' ninth inning home run, which won the game for the American

League to rob Archivon of being the hero of the 1941 Midsummer Classic. Then there's Jimmy

Brown of the St. Louis Cardinals, a switch hitter. That's right or left, depending on whether

a right-hander or left-hander is pitching. Always a dangerous little man up to that plate. Eddie Miller,

that shortstop,

hits at long ball. Frank McCormick of the Cincinnati Reds, another long ball hitter, and a good hitter. And of course, last but certainly not least, one of the biggest power men in the major

leagues, Johnny Mize, who's become very fond, incidentally, of those short right field stands here at the

polo ground since he's become a member of the New York Giants. The distance from home plate

to the right field stands, 294 feet. Not a very long distance, and John has learned how to pull

that ball closely, which you have to do to get them into that right field stands, and is very fond

of them.

There's a hundred foot drop away from that 294 foot sign as the wall out there fades away

toward deep right field to the bullpen.
