Summary

Malith walked away from his home in France about 15 months ago and has been walking ever since. He walked past me last night and I knew I wanted to hear his story. He wandered along the Camino de Santiago then kept going south in Portugal until he reached Gibraltar, where he met a couple sailing to the Canary Islands. He'll be here for a while, then hopes to find a boat going to the Caribbean, South America, and on to Asia. He's a bit over a year into a 5-year journey.

I was sitting in a cafe last night by the beach watching the sunset and the pretty girls walk by and drinking a pint of Guinness, which costs half here what it does in New York or Barcelona.

1:24.2

Another nice thing about this island. By the way, this island apparently is very popular with digital pilgrims.

1:31.6

Digital... no shit, I always call them digital pilgrims but that's not what they're called.

1:37.3

Digital nomads, digital fucking nomads. I don't know why digital pilgrim just comes to me as if they're like worshipping the spirit of technology or something.

1:49.9

Anyway, this is a popular place with people who make a living through their laptops and just want someplace great to live and cheap.

1:59.6

So apparently this is one of the biggest places in Europe for those sorts of folks.

2:05.4

And I'll probably be hooking up with some of them at some point and get some of them on here to talk about how they do it.

2:11.9

How do you do it?

2:14.2

Anyway, I'm sitting in this outdoor cafe reading the New Yorker on my iPad.

2:23.6

And this dude walks by and he's got a big old backpack. I think I actually talk about this a little bit in the episode.

2:31.1

But anyway, he's got this big backpack and it's got duct tape all over it. He's got a cute little dog with him.

2:38.2

And I could just see that this is a special special guy. You just see it in his eyes right away.

2:44.7

Interesting guy. He's on an interesting trip. And luckily, you know, he walked by. I didn't want to bother him or say anything.

2:51.5

But then he came back and I actually turned around and thought, you know, I could go say hello, introduce myself.

2:58.4

Because my first impulse was like, I want to get by the guy beer, you know, by I'm a sandwich, whatever.
