Now, one of the few downsides of being in aviation is that from time to time we lose close friends in airplane accidents,

and it's a pain that never really quite goes away.

I can easily think of five pilots I've known who were in plane crashes and a six pilot who was a passenger in a civil air patrol crash.

And no, these weren't social media friends.

These are people who I had met personally, had a relationship with, and in a few cases

had to actually flown with.

Most of the time when we hear about a plane crash, it doesn't involve someone we know
