I'm a taxi driver working the night shift.

These are my strangest journeys.

It was midnight and I was on my way to pick up a fair.

I worked for a small independent taxi company that operated

the old-fashioned way. The customers phoned the office to order a cab and the dispatcher called

me over the radio to give me the details that I needed for the journey. The pickup address for this

customer was on the outskirts of the city, and that suited me just fine.

The August heat was making the city's center a pressure cooker, and as the buildings thinned out,

I started to relax and enjoy the drive.

I rolled my window down.

There was no breeze, so the open window didn't ease the heat in the cab, but it was good

to feel the night air on my skin.

The houses that I was passing now were older and many stood in their own grounds, from

the cracks in their walls and the leaves and their gutters.

A good few looked like they had seen better days.

I took a right onto a tree-lined avenue.

The house that I was looking for was on the left.
