Hello and welcome to the Mark Rose podcast.

0:12.5

You know, years ago, I remember attending this talk that I was just on the beginning

0:17.8

of my journey, you know, I was discovering, you know, what did I want to do with my life?

0:23.1

I had this calling to want to talk about relationships.

0:26.8

And I also had this sense that I had this spiritual aspect of me that I had been severed from, that I had disconnected myself from, this idea of being connected to more than just

0:39.1

myself, you know, being connected to you, being connected to the planet, I wouldn't have been

0:44.3

able to verbalize it that way at the time. I hadn't done things like group meditations or

0:49.9

sat by a tree with my eyes closed and really just had the intention of connecting with myself

0:55.9

and the earth that I sat upon. You know, I remember as a kid laying in the grass and looking

0:59.8

at the sky and your intention isn't to do that, but of course you experience that. And I think

1:23.5

podcast, I often joke that I'm a recovering Catholic. But what am I recovering from or what was I recovering from?

1:30.4

And it was that the reason I had such a challenging time with Catholicism is that the way that

1:37.4

it tried to teach me when I was in school was to use shame to try to get us to, you know,

1:43.2

behave certain ways or totally disassociate from

1:45.9

our sexuality. So there was no empowerment. It was fear. And fear does garner control, but it doesn't

1:54.2

garner control that is respecting the desires of whatever, you know, they're trying to achieve

2:00.1

or get whatever behavior they're trying to get a group to do.

2:04.1

And, you know, you see that in the way that governments navigate situations with their citizens.

2:10.7

And so I had a really hard time with that.
