And so we come then to the brief rule of Richard III and the debate and confusion continues

much as it has done over his assumption of the throne.

Once again we seem to end up in dichotomies.

Richard has to be one thing or another.

Either he has to be an evil usurping swore on the devil who probably also had serious

body odor.

Or he has to be a noble, a talented man that left you with a faint scent of rosewater.

So the true historians were no doubt about the answer as you'd expect.

Any good Richard did was purely from desperation.

Polidore Virgil's phrase drips within New Endo.

He began to take on hand a certain new form of life and to give the show and crowned

on us of a good man.

And so might merit pardon at God's hand.

To spell it out, Virgil is saying Richard was just putting it on, playing to the galleries.

He was an evil little tick really, just trying to kid us that he was a nice bloke.

Later historians often take a similar if less extreme line, emphasizing Richard's desperate

need for acceptance and support.
