down their own oil and gas industry. But first, the Transport Secretary has said the high-speed

HS2 railway will not open until the late 2030s and may cost as much as 102.7 billion pounds. The railway was originally due to open this year

and cost about a third of the current estimate. But delays and cost overruns have seen the project

repeatedly scaled back from the original plan to run it from London to Birmingham and then on

via two branches to the north of England

and eventually Scotland. Heidi Alexander said she'd inherited a litany of failure.

Blaming the previous government's mishandling of HS2,

she said that instead of signalling the country's ambition,

it had become a symbol of decline.
