Summary

The beginning of the year has a mixture of emotions that come along with it. You can feel excited to build a routine, sad to be losing your summer time, and anxious because you have a lot to do in a short amount of time. To help with this transition into a new season, we want to offer a checklist that can center your thoughts and spend some time focusing on other areas.  Procedures play a BIG role in ensuring that your year starts off right. As you start thinking about all the things on your to-do list, our best recommendation is to create a checklist. Yes, we love checklists and that’s because they work. We are going to share some categories and give you a few examples for each, then we will share 3 different strategies you can use to actually teach and review them with students, and finally we will share 3 important tips to remember! It seems like our time is like starting a countdown because August is when we need to start shifting our minds from relaxing on the beach to

0:22.1

preparing to head back into the classroom. In this episode, we want to share our ultimate

0:27.7

guide for teaching procedures at the beginning of the year so that you can feel more confident

0:33.5

and prepared. But first, we're going to hear a time-sucking hurdle and you're going to instantly understand

0:39.8

why we chose this time-sucking hurdle for this episode.

This TSA comes from Daisy, who says, I'm going to be a first-year sixth-grade teacher.

0:50.7

I'm a little overwhelmed with behavior expectations slash rules slash procedures for the first

0:56.8

day. Please help. Daisy, we are speaking to you in this entire episode. I completely understand

1:05.6

where you're coming from just having that very first year. You don't really know what to do and where to go and how to start

1:12.7

and what to be focused on. And so while we're going to be sharing a lot of the things that

1:18.2

will hopefully answer your questions that you have for your TSC, I will say to lean on your team

1:25.0

as much as possible. Please do not try to recreate the wheel. I feel like as a

1:30.3

first year teacher when I was there, I was trying to recreate everything. I wanted it all to be

1:35.0

like very unique to me and have things be, you know, just very different because I wanted to be

1:40.3

my own teacher and I didn't want to follow what everyone else was doing, that was a mistake.

1:45.3

You need to really just lean on them, beg, borrow, and steal, and then you can revamp it as you

1:53.2

start to grow in that profession. But it is very overwhelming. Take a deep breath and just know

2:00.0

that you're going to make it through.

2:01.6

We don't know how. We never really understand how we make it through, but we always do.

2:06.6

I think that's really good advice to lean on your team teachers. I mean, you should be doing that
