Last week we heard from Roger Morehouse about the lead-up to the Warsaw uprising in the summer of 1944

and the Polish resistance more generally. Today I'm the Warsaw uprising in the summer of 1944 and the Polish resistance more generally.

Today, I'm discussing the uprising itself in the company of Claire Mully, the award-winning historian

who earlier this year published Agent Zoe, the untold story of fearless resistance fighter,

Elspietta Zawaka. Claire, don't get me on my pronunciation again. That's the best I can do,

but welcome back to the podcast. It's wonderful to be on, but let me just say her name,

Elspietta Zavatska. Let's call her Zoh. Okay, great. We'll stick to Zoh from here on.

For those who haven't heard the earlier episode, before we get into the uprising itself, can you just give me a very, very quick update or resume on what Zoe's been up to since the start of the war?

Not easy, I know, Claire.

She's been extremely busy.

So she was actually one of the very first women to serve in the Second World War.

She was shaken awake by the sound of explosions in the early hours of the 1st of September 1939. First,

she thought it was the Polish Air Force. I was taking exercises. But of course, we now know it was

the Blitzkrieg, the invasion of Poland by Germany, Nazi Germany. And she was already in uniform
