Summary

We are coming in hot with some big 2024 energy! The main topic was a deeper science corner breakdown of the new study that challenges conventional wisdom on protein consumption. This research could change how you think about daily fueling, with potential benefits for adaptation and recovery. We geek out on the methodology, featuring an isotope-tagged cow, researchers screaming at participants as they weightlift to failure, and protein shakes with the consistency of sludge.

And the new-year excitement applied to so many cool discussions! Other topics: resolutions (revenge!), a bonkers study that lied to participants about their sleep duration, our pain cave weightlifting, our subsequent injuries, 2024 predictions, the exciting world of continuous biomarker monitoring, how the science may apply to lactate and estrogen, super shoes on trails, the power of Zone 1 training, a bold prediction involving UTMB, and hot takes.

2024 is going to be the best year ever! We wish that all of your metaphorical cows may be tagged with isotope tracers. Praise Dauwalter.

Welcome to the Some Work All Play podcast.

We are so happy with you today.

Happy Tuesday.

0:06.0

It's Tuesday.

0:07.0

And it's not just Tuesday. It's 2024. Megan, 24. This is wild. I know. I'm feeling like 2024 is going to bring some spice. It feels good. It feels a little bit like a sci-fi movie. Because like when I wrote 2024 this morning, like, ah, it feels like it's in the future.

0:05.1

We are currently living in the future.

0:06.5

And I think actually a lot of the things we're going to talk about today have to do with futuristic ideas, whether that's about science or devices and things like that. So maybe it's the perfect timing. Maybe. But I feel like myself in like 2000 would have thought we would have flying cars by now. So I feel like we're in the future, but we're not like as futuristic as my like, I don't know, my 10 year old self dreamed of. Yeah, flying cars in Boulder, they would have to be created by Subaru. That's true. Because there is nothing else on the road other than Subaru cross tracks. And they would still end up in ditches on the side of the snow covered roads just like in the air. And they'd be like cratering from the sky. Yeah. And there'd be like golden retrievers that have little wings because they would evolve very rapidly to go alongside the flying cars. That's a dream. I think that's heaven. That's not just the future. That's a future, but in heaven. That's a wet dream.

Yes.

To touch based on last week's episode. So happy 2024, everybody. If you listened to last week's episode, it was a random one. We did something totally different. People loved it for the most part. I'm not sure everyone loved it, but we didn't get any negative feedback. On this episode, we're going to go back to normal. We're going to be talking about science.

1:07.8

We're going to be talking about fun things with a little bit of that spice mixed in.

1:11.5

I'm kind of sad to go back to normal. Also, we thought a ton of great messages from like things spanning the line of like tampons to scooping, lots of follow-ups and body fluid. It was, I just like felt the love last week. It was great. I like to think of somebody that skipped that episode and just heard what we said about it. Whether that makes them more likely or less likely to go back and listen. Actually, that last statement could just be the summary statement of the podcast episode. I think we called it, like, the best holiday episode or something. Yeah. We could have just put that in, and I wonder what it would have done for listens. Tampons, scooping bodily fluids. Yes. That's it. I mean, it was about that captured like 50% of it. Yeah. Well, as we've talked about before, podcast listens depends so heavily on the title. Like whenever we get the extra bump, we're a little lucky relative to most podcasts in that every single episode is kind of similar vibes. So there's probably a core group of listeners that is the same. But that five or 10% bumps you get, it's all title-based. So maybe the secrets all along was scooping. Exactly. Yeah, we got to find the future buzzwords for 2024. Oh, yeah. We could like predict them. I don't think scooping is going to be one of votes besides the swap

podcast. But you know what? You got to be unique. It's always training topics that are the big

2:38.7

ones. Like Jim Walmsley and Courtney DeWalter obviously really big. But also zone two is really big.

2:44.2

Threshold training, Norwegian training. So we just need to start throwing that in anytime.

2:49.2

Like if there's ever anyone in Norway that applies any of the principles we're talking about, that is Norwegian training. It does not matter what the topic is. We should just reference it every podcast episode just to roll with it. But how are you feeling heading into 2024? You just had this great statement, which I loved. So we were walking upstairs to record the podcast and you say, Megan, I feel good, but almost

3:08.1

too good. It's a little bit scary. Why do you feel so good? I don't know. I think part of the reason

3:13.4

actually is because I haven't run in a little bit. I hurt my knee just slightly. It'll be okay. We're

3:18.8

going to get to it a second. And I think those numbers, like my numbers, my resting heart ate,

3:23.8

all of that have responded really well to taking a step back. Maybe a good lesson about recovery after things like the 50 mile where I did. Sometimes you just need to realize that your body is asking you to turn down the temperature a little bit. So I've done that. My resting heart rate's low. My HRV is high. I'm feeling ready to rock for 2024. Yeah, I feel like

3:41.9

you've turned down the temperature, but turn the spice up to 12. And I like it, actually. I feel like you should bring these vibes every week. Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on to my brain right now. It's quite chaotic, but also very fun. So I'm going to bring that to the episode. You look like you're having a great time. You know why? Why? Because you have a pimple on your chin, Megan.

3:40.4

I know. You were like you're having a great time. You know why? Why?
